Walking into a hospital to give birth can feel both reassuring and overwhelming. Hospitals are designed with policies and procedures to promote safety, but within those systems, it’s important to remember this: you still have rights as a patient.
These rights are supported by patient care standards and ethical medical practice, and they apply during labor and birth just as they would in any other medical setting.
Your Rights as a Patient During Birth
During your hospital stay, you have the right to ask about:

Why a procedure is being recommended
The risks and benefits
Any available alternatives
You should never feel rushed into a decision without understanding it.
Receive Informed Consent
Before any non-emergency procedure, you have the right to:
Be fully informed about what is being done
Understand the purpose, risks, and alternatives
Give or decline consent
This applies to common interventions such as:
Induction or augmentation (Pitocin)
Cervical checks
Epidurals
Continuous monitoring
Cesarean birth (when not emergent)
Take Time When It’s Not an Emergency
In many birth situations, there is time to pause and consider your options. You can ask:
“Is this urgent or can we take a moment?”
Even a short pause can support clearer, more confident decision-making.
Include Your Support Team
You have the right to involve:

Your partner
A family member
Your doula
Your support team can help you process information, ask questions, and feel grounded during decision-making.
You have the right to Refuse or Decline Care:
You have the legal right to decline a procedure or intervention, even if it is recommended.
This does not mean you are being “difficult”—it means you are exercising your right to bodily autonomy.
Be Treated With Dignity and Respect
You deserve:
Respectful communication
Privacy during exams and procedures
Cultural and personal preferences to be honored when possible
Final Thoughts
Understanding your rights allows you to approach birth feeling informed, respected, and empowered.
You are not just a patient—you are a decision-maker in your care.
You have the right to:
Ask
Understand
Pause
Decide
Be supported
And most importantly, you have the right to be treated with dignity every step of the way.
