Supporting Breast Health During Pregnancy: A Doula’s Perspective

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month — a time to educate, support, and remind women everywhere that their breast health matters. As a doula, my role goes beyond supporting families during labor and birth. I also walk alongside women through all the seasons of pregnancy, postpartum, and sometimes, unexpected health challenges like breast cancer.
While breast cancer during pregnancy is rare (about 1 in 3,000 pregnancies), it can still happen — and it can feel overwhelming. Here’s how we, as doulas and support people, can stand beside mamas in this journey with both compassion and evidence-based care.

Understanding Breast Changes in Pregnancy
Pregnancy causes a lot of changes to the breasts — tenderness, enlargement, darkened areolas, and even small lumps (often milk ducts preparing for lactation). But not every change should be dismissed as “just pregnancy.”
Red flags to watch for:
A lump that feels hard, immovable, or doesn’t go away
Skin dimpling or redness
Nipple changes (inversion, discharge not related to milk)
Persistent pain in one area
If you notice anything unusual, it’s always okay to bring it up to your OB, midwife, or provider. Early detection is key — even during pregnancy.
The Doula’s Role in Supporting Breast Health
As doulas, we are trained to listen closely, provide emotional support, and advocate for our clients. Here’s how we can help:
Normalize breast awareness – Encourage mamas to get to know their changing bodies and speak up about concerns.
Support informed decisions – Help clients ask the right questions if imaging or biopsies are recommended. (Yes, ultrasounds and even mammograms can be safely performed during pregnancy with proper precautions.)
Offer emotional care – A breast cancer diagnosis during pregnancy can bring fear and grief. Doulas provide a steady, compassionate presence — holding space for tears, prayer, and hope.
Connect with resources – Share referrals for lactation consultants, mental health providers, or cancer support groups for pregnant women.
Caring for Mind + Spirit
Facing any health scare in pregnancy can feel heavy. As a Christian doula, I gently remind my clients: you are never alone.
“God is within her, she will not fall.” – Psalm 46:5
Whether it’s through prayer, meditation, or affirmations, nurturing your spirit is just as important as nurturing your body. Peace and hope can be powerful companions in a season of uncertainty.
Practical Breast Health Tips
Perform monthly breast self-checks (yes, even during pregnancy)
Wear supportive bras to reduce discomfort
Stay hydrated & nourished to support healthy breast tissue
Schedule regular prenatal visits and mention any breast changes

Final Encouragement
Breast cancer awareness isn’t just for women over 40 — it’s for every woman, every season. By staying informed, speaking up about concerns, and surrounding yourself with a supportive birth team, you can face challenges with confidence.
If you’re walking through this journey — whether it’s a scare, a diagnosis, or recovery — know that you are seen, loved, and supported. Your story matters. 💗
